How we assign rooms

Winter Session Residences

We assign rooms to students who meet the academic credit load requirements (minimum 9 credits per term for undergraduate and full time studies for graduates) as follows:

  • We set aside rooms for new-to-UBC applicants who are offered priority access consideration. For details, please check Priority Access.
  • We set aside rooms for returning UBC students selected in the February Residence Allocation Process.
  • As cancellations and vacancies occur, we offer spaces to waitlisted applicants.
  • First-year students are assigned to Totem Park or Place Vanier. If you have unique circumstances that may benefit from an assignment to an upper-year, suite-style residence, please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Year Round Residences

We assign rooms in year-round residences to students who meet the eligibility requirements as follows:

  • Current year-round residents who commit to a new Residence Contract.
  • Waitlisted applicants as vacancies and cancellations occur.
Accommodating Mobility and Agility Disabilities in both winter session and year-round residences

If you have a mobility or agility disability, or have guests with mobility disabilities, you are welcome to request or accept assignment to accommodation located above the first floor. Nevertheless, you should know that the elevators do occasionally break down, and may be out of order for extended periods. Inconveniences may occur for those unable to negotiate stairs.

Things to do to ensure you don't miss your email offer of residence

A residence offer (including Priority Access offers) is time-limited. If not accepted before the offer expiry date, it is withdrawn and your residence application cancelled.  If you miss your email offer, and fail to accept your residence offer before the expiry date, your housing application will be cancelled.
